It does not affect the Tree it is growing on at all but will prefer to grow where it can have the benefit of the maximum amount of sunlight as possible. That is why on old trees in which the leaf canopy is not so thick will have the best Lichens! Look around the Moors and National Parks where old trees are not felled for example – The Lake District and Peak District are also fabuous places for Lichens.
