Lichens like sunlight- so if a tree loses a lot of its leaves (or canopy) as the tree gets old and branches die, it gives Lichens more sunlight to grow in a more healthy manner. That is why they are often found on particular locations on trees and aligning themselves to maximise photosynthesis. They do not harm the tree at all and certainly not old ones!
